Install a New High Efficiency Boiler

By design, high efficiency modern Natural Gas boilers use less energy than High Mass Oil boilers.  They don’t require a chimney, and vent with PVC through the side of the home.  High efficiency natural gas boilers cost between $8,000 and $12,000 to install, and are eligible for a number of incentives.  Depending on the age of the boiler you currently depend on, it may make more sense to replace it for two simple reasons; you will save more energy and you will save on service.

What makes a modern gas boiler more efficient than a high mass oil boiler?

  • Oil boilers connect to a natural draft chimney, which is always pulling air up them.  This means that cold, outside air is constantly being sucked in to the house through your windows, doors and other small cracks to replace the warm air going up the chimney!
  • Oil boilers are binary; they fire at 100%, and then they shut off.  Natural Gas boilers are modulating; they can fire at a fraction of their output to match the load by reducing their firing rate by up to 75%. This equates to smoother, more efficient operation. Similar to driving on the interstate highway versus stop and go traffic.
  • Oil boilers pull cold air into the house, cooling down the house to provide combustion air for the boiler.  Direct Vent Natural Gas boilers utilize outdoor air for combustion, keeping the warm air in the house where you want it.
  • Condensing Gas boilers vent with plastic pipe.  This is possible because they pull so much of the heat out of the flame that some of the exhaust actually condenses into liquid before exiting the boiler.  By trapping this latent heat, condensing gas boilers gain an additional 10% of efficiency, yielding a rating of up to 95% by the EPA.

All of this adds up to between 20 and 30% energy savings, on top of the fuel savings. Combine your new boiler installation with some simple insulation upgrades and qualify for a 5% loan with no money down.
